Here are 5 homegrown Tucson organizations that help kids. All were founded by Tucson folks that saw a specific need in our community and sought to fill it. How awesome is that? All are worthy of your time or funds if you have some to spare…
1. Casa de los Niños
Casa de los Niños was founded in 1973 as one of the first crisis nurseries in the United States and works to prevent child abuse and neglect through prevention programs and services. There are several ways you can help support their goal from volunteering your time to donating money or wish list items. You can even support them by shopping at their thrift shop.
2. The Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona
The Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona was the nation’s first diaper bank, it’s goal this year is to meet 100% of the local need. It’s my favorite organization to support. I can’t imagine having to choose between diapers and rent. Or diapers and electricity. Unfortunately there are families in this position because there is no public assistance for diapers. You’ve helped me donate money and diapers over the years, naturally they can always use more! Kids keep pooping. 😉
3. Youth On Their Own
Youth On Their Own was founded in 1986 by a local guidance counselor to help homeless students graduate. They provide guidance, financial assistance and basic human needs to help with the extra burden these kids face. Their needs include school supplies, but also wish list items, volunteers and of course money.
4. Cinderella’s Closet
Formal dresses may seem frivolous compared with the work of the first three groups but I think all kids should have the opportunity to attend prom. And an easy way to help Cinderella’s Closet is to donate dresses you or your daughter may have collecting dust in the closet. What an easy way to make a girl smile!
5. You Tell Me!!
What’s your favorite Tucson or even Arizona kids organization? I’d love to feature another organization, share their mission and how people can support their cause! Bonus points if it’s homegrown like the ones above!
