Peter and I spent our last evening in Chicago taking the Chicago Architecture Foundation boat tour. It was our first family trip to Chicago and while most of our adventures centered around our little guys (Chicago Children’s Museum, The Science and Industry Museum, The Navy Pier, etc), we did manage to sneak out on this excursion by ourselves. I am sharing a few of my favorite pictures from our tour.
The tours are led by certified architecture tour guides who share lots of interesting historical facts about the development of Chicago and of course the architecture of the buildings downtown. It made for a real neat way to see the city!
These are “Pioneer” condos because they were converted when it wasn’t cool to live along the Chicago River. The original residents were pioneers. 🙂
This curved “post modern” building was neat especially in contrast to the Brutalist building below.
One River Place was finished in 1929 and has a statue of “The spirit of Progress” on the top.
My favorite building was the Wrigley Building! It’s so much more awesome in person, just like Wrigley Field!
I am not necessarily a fan of architecture or boat tours but we had half a dozen random, unrelated people recommend this tour. Seriously, it became laughable how many times people told us to take the tour. And now I’m joining their ranks.
The Chicago Architecture Boat Tour is a must when visiting Chicago! You can see more of my pictures from our Chicago adventure on Instagram.
The twilight river cruise is really cool but it’s only offered on Fridays (7:30pm). The rest of the tours are all during the day. I really loved the fact we had changing light throughout the tour and ended with a beautiful view of the Chicago skyline at night!
If we had taken a daytime tour we would have surely melted into a puddle of sweat, it was beyond hot! I think sitting on the boat, drenched in sweat would have been unpleasant and distracting. A daytime tour would be best in the fall and spring – just my opinion though. 😉
We ended our mini date night in Chicago with the best Peanut Butter and Chocolate cupcake EVER! It was from sacred grounds bakery & café in Water Tower Place. Thanks again to my mom and step dad for watching the
monsters boys for us!
