Occasionally, I have the opportunity to test drive vehicles and as a result, I learn about different car features. Recently we took a road trip in the 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage. While not an ideal vehicle for a long road trip, it did have some great features and made me realize that regardless of the vehicle price point there are some features that all family cars should have.
1. Cargo Space
Kids need stuff, lots of stuff. Diaper bags, school bags, sports bags, grocery bags, and suitcases are standard gear for most families. Every family car should have a good amount of cargo space. I was truly surprised by how large the trunk was in the Mirage. We had no trouble loading it full of luggage for our road trip.
2. Backup Camera
I really love backup cameras, it’s so much more reassuring having that additional view. Backup cameras will be mandatory in all new vehicles next year, so this will be a standard feature soon. However, it’s important to note that for older cars, it’s a feature you should seek out for your own piece of mind. The Mirage had a great backup camera with large display screen.
3. Smart Phone Connectivity
I was shocked by how easy it was to connect my iPhone to the Mirage. Shocked because it’s not easy to do with our current car. Once paired, my iPhone screen popped up on the Mirage’s display, allowing us to use my phone’s navigation and maps on our road trip. Staying hands-free while driving is important but so is having access to technology, great smartphone connectivity allows for both.
4. Roadside Coverage
Some new cars come with roadside coverage as part of their warranty but if yours does not or has run out, consider an app like the Good Hands Rescue app which can help with simple problems and epic road trip fails. It’s a great way to have roadside assistance available without paying a monthly fee.
5. Fuel Economy
Whether you love the planet or just saving money, almost everyone wants a vehicle with great MPG. The Mitsubishi Mirage had great fuel economy on our road trip to California, it gets up to 42 MPG on the highway.
And let’s add a bonus feature to this list for me. I loved the heated seats in the Mirage, it was a luxury feature I wasn’t expecting to find. My husband would have preferred air conditioned seats. 😉
What features do you think family cars should have?
We were provided with a week-long test drive of the 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage in exchange for our honest opinions.
