This post is brought to you by Theranos
Good health is something everyone values. It’s not something you can always count on, but with early detection measures available, you can certainly work to improve your own health situation. One very powerful tool in modern medicine is blood lab tests. It’s a tool I think many people avoid for obvious reasons like pain, fear, convenience, and cost. I want to introduce you to a company that is working to improve everyone’s access to healthcare, so you can #ownyourhealth.
Theranos was founded on the idea that earlier disease detection makes therapy more effective. Routine blood tests can make everyone more proactive about their health, and Theranos wants to help improve the process.
Less Blood = Less Fear
Many of the tests offered by Theranos require only a few drops of blood. All of their tests, including venous draws, require dramatically smaller samples and use much smaller needles than traditional labs. These smaller sample sizes can reduce pain and fear for many people. As a parent, I love this! Kids (and some adults) are often scared of big needles and large blood draws. A less scary experience can help encourage everyone to get necessary tests done regularly. And, the fact that less blood is needed for each test can also greatly benefit individuals who need frequent blood work.
Do you have a Walgreens close by? I bet most of you do, and that’s one of the reasons Theranos has partnered with them. There are over 8,000 Walgreens locations in the US, making eventual access to the Theranos lab service convenient for just about everyone. In fact, Theranos already offers lab testing in over 40 locations in Arizona. With many locations and extended hours including evenings and weekends, lab testing is about to become VERY convenient.
Up Front Pricing
I know what you’re thinking…
But how much does this awesome convenience cost?
The best part is that you know EXACTLY what each test will cost you. Theranos publishes their lab test prices right on their website. You can browse the tests by name, use the search feature to find a specific test, and easily find out what each test will cost. No matter whether or not you have insurance, tests cost the same for everyone.
Own Your Health
Along with convenience, Theranos believes access to testing is important. Beginning July 3, a new law will go into effect in Arizona, a law Theranos supported. Arizona HB 2645 will allow everyone the right to order their own lab work. Currently, you need a doctor’s order for all but a few basic tests.
Unfortunately, there are plenty of people without insurance or with high deductible insurance coverage. Because it can take weeks or months to schedule a doctor’s appointment, showing up to your doctor’s appointment with blood work already done would be very proactive, allowing you to discuss any health issues that much sooner and engage with your physician like never before.
If you are working on your cholesterol level, getting more frequent tests make sense. The same goes for diabetics working on their blood sugar levels – more frequent Hemoglobin A1c tests makes sense. You should be able to have diagnostic tests done when you want; you should own your health!
How do you own your health?
