Quinn started his 2nd year of kindergarten today. Did he fail last year? Nope. Did his teacher fail last year? Nope. (She was actually quite awesome!)
Quinn just isn’t old enough for 1st grade yet. The cut off date in Arizona is August 31st, Quinn’s birthday is several weeks later. So he is repeating kindergarten this year.
Last year he had a fabulous experience learning not only how a curriculum based classroom works but also all the essential kindergarten academics.
Academically he is ready for first grade. Emotionally and socially, I don’t know; the reality is, it doesn’t matter. He just isn’t old enough for first grade. The decision is out of my hands and I am so thankful for that.
I shared our decision to place him in kindergarten early last year. I know it was the right decision for Quinn. Some friends and family voiced concern that Quinn would be bored with a 2nd year of kindergarten but I don’t think so.
- He didn’t exceed kindergarten standards, he met them. He transformed from a shy preschooler to a confident kindergartener but there is still plenty for him to learn and practice.
- His class at our local elementary school will be much larger than the private school class of ~10 from last year. This year he can adjust to the size of elementary school classes and how it affects his teacher’s time for individual attention and her teaching style.
- Plus just being on a big campus with lots of bigger kids will require an adjustment. Last year his kindergarten class was the big class on a campus full of preschoolers. Now he is the little fish in an even bigger sea!
I am happy that he will have this 2nd year to hone his kindergarten skills and adjust to a public elementary school set up.
I know redshirting (or starting kindergarten late) is a buzz word for some parents but I am actually finding that repeating is also a surprisingly popular choice. I know of 4 kids just from his tiny class who are repeating kindergarten. All have August/September birthdays, so they would either be the oldest or the youngest in their class. The parents of the kids with August birthdays actually made a conscious choice to have their kids repeat kindergarten to give them an extra year to mature. Outside of his class, I know of other families making the same decision.
Did your kids start kindergarten early or late? Do you know of any other kids repeating kindergarten for whatever reason? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
