It’s spring break here in Tucson and I’m taking the boys up to Phoenix for a couple of fun days. I just finished packing our bags and am sharing 5 of my top packing tips. These tips help keep me sane whether we are headed out on a short trip nearby or a long trip across the country.
My number one packing tip is to avoid overpacking. This may seem obvious but I think everyone needs this reminder especially families with little kids. I try to keep the “what if” scenarios down in my head and pack the bare minimum of what we will need on the trip. I also let the kids bring their own backpack to carry any toys, books, etc that they want to bring. Quinn has learned that packing less means easier access to stuff he does bring and he’s less likely to lose something while we’re gone. Elliot still tends to stuff as many stuffed animals as possible into his backpack. 😀
Share a Suitcase
My goal is to pack clothes and toiletries for both boys in one suitcase. I can always make this happen because I plan on doing laundry on any trips that last a week or longer. Doing laundry on vacation isn’t ideal but we almost always have some downtime which allows me to get a load done. I love packing 1/2 as much stuff. That also means 1/2 as much laundry when we get home!
Emergency Laundry Supplies
On long trips, I make sure I pack enough laundry supplies for several loads. I can’t avoid paying crazy prices to use the hotel laundromat but I can avoid overpaying for laundry soap and dryer sheets! Even on short trips, I always bring at least one emergency pack of laundry supplies.
Use Packing Bags or Ziplocks
I pack each boys’ clothes in separate packing bags. One kiddo uses green and another uses orange. It helps keep the suitcase looking like a hurricane hit it when they don’t tear through the whole thing looking for something. The bags also help keep wet swimsuits contained and dirty shoes away from clean clothes! If you don’t want to invest in packing bags, Ziplock plastic bags work great too.
Coordinate Clothes Palette
I try to pack clothes that will mix and match easily. That way the boys can easily pair any top with any bottoms without looking too goofy. Although dressing goofy is sometimes their game. 😉 If you really like to plan everything, you can pack each individual outfit in a Ziplock bag. That’s too Type A for me, though. 😀
