Do you need a Cricut Maker to make costumes? Nope but it can make it a lot easier especially when adding precise details. Making costumes is just one of the things I love to create with my Cricut Maker.

Making Costumes with Cricut

What kind of DIY projects can I make with my Cricut Maker? I make a lot of different projects with Cricut Maker including holiday decorations like Halloween pumpkins, Easter baskets, and snowflakes. The Maker is also great for custom t-shirt designs and my favorite kind of project, costumes. Making costumes doesn’t have to be limited to just Halloween. Costumes are great for school spirit days, community plays, disneybounding, themed parties and your child’s dress-up box.

What makes the Maker different from other Cricut machines? A Cricut Maker allows more materials to be used, giving you the ability to work with more costume materials like fabric and leather.

Costume materials you can cut with Cricut Maker

What materials can I cut with a Cricut Maker? You can cut a wide variety of costume materials with the Cricut Maker including fabric, felt, vinyl, iron-on vinyl and leather. I plan on trying to cut duct tape soon, it is one of my favorite costume materials to work with.

Cricut Maker Rotary Blade

The Cricut Maker has a bigger variety of cutting blades compared with other Cricut machines. One one of those special blades is the rotary blade which can cut fabric without any backing. I don’t own a sewing machine (yet?) but I do love making costumes with felt. Cutting felt by hand requires super sharp scissors and some patience. Sometimes I just can’t cut straight or I end up with jagged edges which is frustrating. The rotary blade solves all my felt cutting problems. It cut out a perfect “B” for our Duck Tales Beagle Boys costume last year. I wish I had it when making the red bow for our Cat in the Hat costume.

Cricut Fine Point Blade

A fine point blade that comes standard with Cricut machines will cut both vinyl and iron-on vinyl. Using Cricut vinyl is a great option for Halloween costumes if you don’t plan on wearing them more than once. The vinyl will stick on fabric like a giant sticker but can be peeled off when you are done with the costume. We cut a giant maple leaf out of red vinyl for the Duke Caboom costume cape. Cricut vinyl also works great when you can’t use iron-on vinyl for a costume piece. We used vinyl to create the face on the the paper lantern head for the Fortnite Tomato Head costume. Iron-on vinyl will make the costume permanent, which is perfect if you plan on wearing the costume more than once or just want a more durable costume piece. Our Disneybound Beast shirt is a great example of using Everyday Iron-On for a costume or in this case a disneybound. I also used iron-on vinyl for our VSCO skeleton costume last year, to create an authentic VSCO girl shirt.

Cricut Maker Knife Blade

I don’t own the knife blade yet but I can’t wait to get my hands on one for costume making. Both my Han Solo holster and Jyn Erso holster could have been made better using my Cricut Maker and a knife blade.

How to make costumes with a Maker

How does a Cricut work? A Cricut machine uses various blades to cut designs on a variety materials. It can also draw using pens but that skill isn’t usually applicable to costume making. Once you design your project in Design Space (app), the design is sent via the app to your Cricut cutting machine.

Using Design Space to make costumes

Will it be easy for me to learn the software to make costumes? Design Space is fairly straight forward to use once you’ve played around with it a few times. Simply open up Design Space then insert an image you want to cut. Cricut images are available within Design Space or you can subscribe to Cricut Access with over 100,000 images, fonts, and projects available to use. You can also upload your own image. Then customize your project by adding text, change sizes and colors before sending it to be cut by the Cricut Maker.
