A couple weekends ago, we headed back to the Westin Kierland in Scottsdale with the boys. It is an awesome family resort and I wanted to share 10 reasons why your family will love it!
The Westin Kierland in Scottsdale: A Family Resort
10) Adventure Pool with Lazy River and Water Slide
Not only does the Adventure pool over a 900′ lazy river and 110′ water slide both of which Peter and I enjoyed last fall on our solo trip but also a zero entry pool and fountains for little kid splashing! Unfortunately, it was pretty darn cold on our recent trip so the boys didn’t get a chance to swim. I am sure we will be back to check it out when it warms up.
The Kierland FlowRider opened last October and allows for surfing in the desert! The water is even heated during the “colder” Arizona months! With unusually cold weather and rain last weekend, I was not brave enough to try the FlowRider but I plan on it! “Flowboarding” is likely closest I will ever get to surfing! We did get a chance to watch Becca’s Crazy Boys take part in the fun, they had a blast! Don’t believe me? Check out Becca’s video!
8) Kierland Resort FUN Team & Kierland Mining Company
The FUN team can be found at the Kierland Mining company 9am-5pm daily. There you can learn all about all the fun experiences the Kierland Resort has to offer. The Pathfinder is their weekly guide to all the resort fun, including a schedule of the activities the FUN team coordinates throughout the resort. Activities like Story Time, Adult Margarita Putting Challenge, Arts&Crafts, and Kids Charades. You can also borrow books and board games.
The FUN team even left Quinn and Elliott a special message in our bathtub before we arrived. The boys thought it was FANTASTIC!
7) Bicycle and ElliptiGo Rentals
Not only can you rent regular bikes, kids bikes and even a bike trailer (for carting around your toddler), you can also rent an ElliptiGo! I had never seen one before, totally neat! Plus after a short 15-minute ride through the neighborhood surrounding the Kierland resort, you will find several miles of desert trails to bike.
6) Kids Club
The Villas Kids Club runs year round and features crafts, games and wii lessons supervised by the FUN team. Open 9am-5pm with a $10 per hour charge. It’s only available for kids 4-12, so we didn’t try it.
5) Pajama Party
The Kids Pajama Party is a fun nighttime version of the Kids club that includes dinner and a movie, allowing parents a quiet evening out. It’s offered from 5:30 to 9:30 with a $50 charge that includes dinner. Again with Elliot, not quite 3, we didn’t try it. They do have a neat offer for parents wanting to dine at Deseo which I highly recommended! Receive complimentary Pajama Party sessions for up to two kids when dining in deseo! That’s like a $100 discount for deseo! Need more encouragement? Check out my deseo review from last fall!
4) OK Corral
The OK Corral is a fun outdoor space adjacent to the Adventure pool. At the OK Corral you’ll find basketball, foosball, table tennis, lawn chess and even RC Car race tracks! Families can spend hours hanging out and playing together in this super fun area! You can also find other FUN activities (bingo, arts & crafts, etc) organized by the FUN team! Check the Pathfinder during your stay for a complete schedule. Plus on Friday and Saturday evenings you can enjoy S’mores at the OK Corral
3) Kierland Kampfires
Kierland Kampfire S’mores is an awesome family activity offered Friday and Saturday evenings. Not only are the traditional supplies available but also flavored marshmallows, AZ chips and a variety of chocolate, with so many options you’d be hard pressed to actually try every combination. My new favorite s’more is Reese’s peanut butter cups in lieu of Hershey’s chocolate! This is a complimentary activity available to all guests!

2) Scottish Bagpipes at Sunset
The Westin Kierland offers a unique concert every evening at sunset with Michael McClanathan playing the haunting sounds of the bagpipe! His music is a special tribute to the contributions made by Scottish immigrants to the development of Arizona’s railroads, mines and towns. He was actually playing in the lobby during our visit because the weather was so yucky. It was still a very cool experience! I know seeing a real live bagpiper would be awesome for any Brave fans!
1) The Kierland Compass – Scavenger Hunt
One of my favorite family FUN features is the Kierland Compass scavenger hunt. The Compass is a trailblazers guide to exploring the Kierland Resort. Collect a stamp at each location (some require an activity). Then return to the Kierland Mining Company to collect you loot, super cute pins for your Compass lanyard. Disney-like in the collecting of cute pins but free. I loved how each pin fits the destination like a pink donut for Coffee Flats & Snowbowls and a cute bagpiper for Bagpipes at Sunset! Plus they redesign the pins every year!
Next time I want to schedule a little me time at their Agave Spa!
Tell me what your favorite family activity at the Westin Kierland Resort would be!
With so many activities you could easily spend a week at the Kierland Resort and never leave. However, on our trip, we did have grand plans for our Scottsdale, AZ adventure. Check out all the fun stuff we did off-site in Scottsdale on a budget!
