Disney invited me to attend the #MaryPoppinsReturnsEvent, my Mary Poppins Returns movie review is a result of the trip. The opinions expressed here are my own.

5 reasons to see Mary Poppins Returns

I can’t wait to take my boys to see Mary Poppins Returns in theaters next week. It’s a sweet movie, full of fun and nostalgia. It’s the perfect family friendly movie to watch during the holidays! Read my top 5 reasons you should go see Mary Poppins Returns next week too!

Mary Poppins Returns Character Poster

1. Emily Blunt

Mary Poppins Returns can’t work without an awesome Mary Poppins. Taking on such an iconic character like Mary Poppins was a gutsy move for Emily Blunt since everyone associates the role with Julie Andrews. Somehow Emily has carved out her own version of Mary Poppins that really works. She was practically perfect in every way!

Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack in Mary Poppins Returns

2. Lin-Manuel Miranda

Since the movie is about Mary Poppins returning, rather than a remake of the original movie, Lin-Manuel Miranda plays a totally new character. Jack is a lamplighter instead of a chimney sweep which better fits with the movie’s 1930’s timeline. Jack is very Bert-esque though and makes a fun counterpart to Mary Poppins during their adventures.

3. The music is awesome

Honestly I am not a fan of musicals, there are some exceptions but generally, they are not my thing. The songs in Mary Poppins Returns are so perfect though. Songwriters Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman really made an amazing soundtrack for Mary Poppins Returns.

It was challenging to create new music within the vein of the original without copying the amazing Sherman Brothers creations in the original Mary Poppins. I think they did a fantastic job and I’ve been listening to the soundtrack every day since it was released.

You can stream it on Amazon or Spotify right now if you use either of those music services. It’s super fun and it’s helping tide me over until I get to see the movie again next week!

4. Amazing Cast

The the rest of Mary Poppins Returns cast is also amazing. It was especially fun to see veteran actors Meryl Streep, Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury in their respective roles. I totally grew up watching Murder She Wrote, so seeing Angela Lansbury as the Balloon Lady was a lot of fun and made me a little nostalgic.

Dick Van Dyke was everyone’s favorite at the world premiere. The entire theater gave him a standing ovation when he arrived to take his seat and also when he took the stage with the rest of the cast after the movie. And honestly, watching him dance during his scene was amazing. Emily Blunt talked about what it was like have him on set during her interview.

Meryl Streep in Mary Poppins Returns

Meryl’s role as cousin Topsy was silly and whimsical. It fit in perfectly with the wild adventures you expect from Mary Poppins, naturally, Mary’s cousin is quite special too! Lin-Manuel Miranda spoke about filming with Meryl during our interview with him.

5. Uplifting Movie Perfect for the Holidays

There is a little sadness in the movie but that’s why Mary Poppins Returns, to help the Banks children find there way. She guides them through adventures and helps the entire family find their joy again. It’s the perfect movie to watch during the holidays this year. Everyone can use a little help finding joy and fun in their lives again! The crazy fantasies and fun music will definitely capture your kid’s attention, and likely yours as well!
