Last week we took a slight detour from the Avengers press trip to screen Disneynature’s latest movie, Monkey Kingdom and visit the LA Zoo. I’m more of an Avengers and Star Wars type girl, so this was the first Disneynature film I’ve seen. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie. Maya the heroine doesn’t have super powers but she’s still pretty awesome. I know my boys would LOVE to see it, and I’m guessing all the other Disneynature films as well.

Disneynature Monkey Kingdom

About Monkey Kingdom:

Life is an adventure for Maya, the clever and resourceful blonde-bobbed monkey in “Monkey Kingdom,” Disneynature’s new feature film set among ancient ruins in the storied jungles of South Asia. Maya’s world is forever changed when she welcomes her son, Kip, into her complicated extended family. Like all families, Maya’s has more than its share of colorful personalities—and she’s determined to give her son a leg up in the world. When their longtime home at Castle Rock is taken over by powerful neighboring monkeys, Maya’s whole family retreats, and she uses her street smarts and ingenuity to uncover untapped resources amidst strange new creatures and unsettling surroundings. Ultimately, they will all have to work together to reclaim Castle Rock, where Maya can hopefully realize her dreams for her son’s future.

Disneynature MONKEY KINGDOM

My favorite part of the movie is when the monkeys head into town looking for food, hilarity ensues. I also really enjoyed learning about the complex social structure of the monkey kingdom. The heroine, Maya is at the bottom and is content until she has her own child. I think all moms will appreciate the relationship Maya has with her son Kip, and how his existence changes her focus in life and her drive to achieve more for him.  You want your kids to have the best life and Maya wants the same thing for Kip.

Monkey Kingdom opens today in theaters and would make a fun weekend adventure for the whole family. Check out this Monkey Kingdom trailer for a fun sneak peek at the movie:

If you see Monkey Kingdom opening week (April 17 – 23), Disneynature will make a donation in your honor to protect monkeys and other endangered species in their natural habitats through Conservation International.
