Don’t you love discovering cool events in your own hometown? Just last weekend, we spent Sunday afternoon hanging out in downtown Tucson at Cyclovia Tucson. What is Cyclovia? Good question.

Cyclovia Tucson is a unique community event where families can bike through downtown Tucson safely. Plus there is also local booths, activities, and food!

From the Cyclovia Tucson Website:

A Spanish word signifying the temporary closure of a network of streets to cars so that they become “open” to  people. During Cyclovia anyone can bike, walk, skate and participate in fun, free activities.

One of the first and largest cyclovias in the world is held in Bogotá, Colombia.  Every Sunday and holiday, every week of the year, the city closes down over 70 miles of roadways to cars to invite people to bike, walk, talk, exercise, picnic, sunbathe, etc. in the streets.  People from all backgrounds come together in this beautiful community-inspiring event

We had a little family adventure at Cyclovia Tucson along with my dad. My dad’s actually the one who wanted to check it out.  He spent quite a few years living in South America and enjoyed a similar cyclovia event in Guatemala City every weekend.

The Cyclovia Tucson route had several activity hubs full of fun booths and activities for all ages. The big boys rode bikes while Elliot and I opted to just walk around and check out booths. We spent a lot of time near the Pima County Library bookmobile.

They were giving away a free book to kids and adults.

Plus they had bubbles. There is something super fun about extra large bubble wands.

Biking is the main attraction at Cyclovia Tucson. There were plenty of people walking, strolling, skating and scooting as well.

Unique Bikes at Cyclovia Tucson

The bulk of the bikes were regular bikes everything from big wheels and balance bikes to BMX and mountain bikes but there were plenty of really unique bikes as well. It was fun just watching them go buy and gawking at the innovative, interesting, and just plain weird bikes.

Cyclovia Tucson Activity Hubs

I was surprised by the wide variety of activities and booths as well. Food, information, services and activities were all well represented.

Cyclovia Tucson is held twice a year, the next one is scheduled for October 29th at 10 AM.
