Lou is an amazingly sweet Pixar short that is showing right now before Cars 3. While at the Cars 3 press junket, Lou Director Dave Mullins and Producer Dana Murray gave a behind the scenes presentation on the making of Lou. Here are some fun facts about Lou that we learned from Dave and Dana.

Dave Mullins pitched Pixar for 8 years before he got to direct his own short.
It then took 4 years to create Lou.
Lou is the only red thing in the film. They really wanted him to pop on the screen.
Lou tells a fun story with a great message without getting too “after school special” on you.
They use lighting and colors to express emotions, the lighting goes from cool to warm in Lou
Lou is made up of timeless toys that really connect with kids, not the latest craze, (like fidget spinners).
There are some fun movie references in Lou including one that needs to phone home!
They repurposed kids from other Pixar movies to be in Lou, kids from Inside Out and Finding Dory.
JJ is based on a kid in Riley’s new class in Inside Out.
JJ shares his initials with Dave Mullin’s mom.
Lou is composed by Christophe Beck, who was the composer for FROZEN.
Copyright issues prevented the short from being called Lost and Found.
John Lasseter said that Lou looked like a pain to make, so Dave Mullins had to do it.
Everything was animated by hand for Lou.
