School starts next week which means I can officially start thinking about Halloween, right? I brainstorm costumes year-round but I do restrain other fun Halloween ideas until ‘summer’ is over. I love how easy these mummy Rice Krispies treats are to make.
Rice Krispie Mummies
Do you work with fondant? I was always scared of it, it sounded fancy and so I hesitated from working with it. I also love buttercream frosting, like it’s my favorite and I would marry it if I could. 😉 Homemade buttercream frosting is amazing but doesn’t always lend itself to fun and easy themed treats.
Easy Halloween Treat
My first experience using fondant was at the cupcake class Quinn and I took during our Royal Caribbean cruise last year. We made cute little frog cupcakes. Just recently, I struck out finding blue shoestring licorice for my Forky cupcakes, so I opted for a little blue fondant. It worked beautifully. I am sold on its ease of use for fun dessert ideas!
Mummy Rice Crispies Treat
I love making fun themed treats using Rice Krispies treats because you can make homemade Rice Krispies treats or just decorate premade Rice Krispies treats. Just unwrap rice krispie treats and start decorating!
Rice Krispies Treat Recipe
Coat a rectangular pan (13 x 9 inches in size) with cooking spray. Set aside. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add miniature marshmallows and stir constantly until completely melted. Remove marshmallow mixture from heat and add rice cereal. Fold until well incorporated. Press rice cereal treat mixture into a coated pan and allow to cool for at least 30 minutes. Once the rice cereal treats are set, cut into 8 rectangles.
Again if you want to skip the homemade rice Krispie treat part, just buy a box of Rice Krispies Treats or check out this cool sheet of Rice Krispies treats. Personally, I am happy either way. It depends on how much time I have and if I’ve found a great deal on ingredients or premade treats, etc. I used premade Rice Krispies treats for our Gingerbread House idea, and it worked really well. Plus I think Rice Krispies treats are way yummier than gingerbread!
Decorate the Mummy Rice Cereal Treats
Using an electric mixer, beat together softened butter, confectioners’ sugar and milk. These ingredients will make up the buttercream icing. Start beating on low speed and gradually increase to high. Once the ingredients are smooth and form semi-stiff peaks, it is ready.
Frost each rice cereal treat using an offset spatula, a butter knife works ok too. Roll out fondant until it’s about ¼ of an inch thick. Use a paring knife to cut out thin strips from the white fondant. Place strips all over the frosted rice cereal treats, in no particular order. This creates the mummy wrapping look. Just be sure to leave a space in the upper area for the candy googly eyes. Add 2 candy googly eyes on each rice cereal treat. Trim any excess fondant. If you want you can add a lollipop stick to each treat for a fun Halloween party idea.
