This year marks an epic Pi Day for math geeks everywhere. Most people know the math symbol pi is represented by 3.14, marking march 14th Pi Day every year. The value of π is actually 3.141592653…. going on forever. So this year we will actually be able to celebrate π day even more accurately at 3/14/15 9:26 (53 seconds) to be precise. And yay it’s a Saturday which means you can have AWESOME Pi Day fun at home!!
Pi Day Food Ideas
Any kind of pie makes the most sense on π day.
Last year I made chicken pot pies, with a “Pi” symbol crust. They turned out super cute!
Pizza “pie” also works great. If you make it yourself then you can create a pi symbol out of the toppings.
Make or eat your favorite kind of pie for dessert. Apple, cheery, french silk, which is your favorite?
How about Pi shaped cookies?
It doesn’t have to be all about “Pi”e. You can also celebrate with circular foods like cookies or cake. Bonus points for decorating them with the π symbol!
Pi Day Activities
Read a math adventure book: Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi and Sir Cumference and the First Round Table are two good ones! (affiliate links)
Make a paper chain representing the digits in Pi. Designate each number with a different color paper. How long can you make your pi paper chain?
Make Pi Day bracelets, similar to the paper chain above. Assign each number a different color bead.
Make Pi Day themed shirts. I used these awesome Mud Pie and Cutie Pie designs templates.
Measure the circumference and diameter of circular items. If you have older kids, use their data to calculate π, remember c=πd
Dress up in Pi Day costumes – either as different kinds of Pi or even as Albert Einstein whose birthday was also on 3/14!
Create circle art. Cut out various sizes of circles in different colors and let your kids create fun art work.
