Building with LEGO bricks is one of my boys’ favorite things to do. While we don’t normally travel with LEGO bricks, I decided to try it out on our recent trip to San Diego. I had just received a few fun boxes from the LEGO company, (Thanks, LEGO) and the boys didn’t want to wait until we returned home to start building!
Playing with LEGO sets and Minifigures turned out to be a fantastic way to spend time in our hotel room. I came up with a few more ways to travel with LEGO and am sharing them with you today.
1. Build with LEGO in your hotel room
Bringing a new LEGO set or two on a trip can help kids have fun during downtime at the hotel. I don’t want my boys to rely on watching TV or playing on their iPADs every time we head back to our room, having a fun new set to play with really helped with that. Be sure to pack a couple Ziplock bags to store any extra LEGO bricks or incomplete projects.
2. LEGO Travel Kit
It’d be hard to build a new LEGO set in the car or on an airplane, instead, you can bring a LEGO travel kit. We made a travel activity kit a few years ago that included a variety of fun activities including LEGO bricks for our boys to use while traveling. We’ve outgrown that kit, so I plan on making a more compact LEGO travel kit soon.
3. Take fun photos with Minifigures
Add a little silly to your travel pictures. Let your kids take touristy pictures of their favorite Minifigure, similar to the Flat Stanley project. A Minifigure is easy to bring along on your adventures, just stash it in your pocket and you will be ready take extra fun pictures.
4. Trade Minifigures
If your trip takes you to LEGOLAND or a LEGO Discovery Center, be sure to bring along extra Minifigures to trade. It’s a fun activity and it doesn’t cost anything to trade for a cool new minifig. It doubles as a free souvenir option.
5. Play with Minifigures
My boys always pack a few toys in their backpack to play with at our destination. If you don’t want to take a full LEGO set, consider just bringing a few Minifigures. LEGO Minifigs don’t take much room and are great for imaginative play. If you are looking for more than a Minifigure and less than a big set, check out LEGO BrickHeads. We were sent a LEGO BrickHeadz Batgirl and the boys really enjoyed making a big character out of LEGO bricks.
6. LEGO travel game
You can also find lots of fun LEGO travel game ideas online. I love this one from Stuffed Suitcase, you can print everything you need from her site and she has multiple ways to play the game. It looks great for long road trips.
