Advent calendars are a fun way to count the days until Christmas. We have done the little chocolate ones in the past but this year I came across a different idea, perfect to encourage my little readers! Our new Christmas tradition is a Christmas book advent calendar.
Christmas Book Advent Calendar
It’s a simple tradition to start, you just need to wrap 24 Christmas/Holiday/Winter themed books. I started by scavenging the boys current book collection and came up with 10 books that fit the Christmas/winter theme. Then I hit up thrift stores and Bookmans (local used book store) to round out our collection.
After wrapping each book you could label them 1-24, and count down the days that way. I knew my boys would love to pick out the book each night, so I decided to just stack them up. They look pretty stacked up on the chair!
I did pick out an especially fun book for day 1, Mickey’s Christmas Carol and also saved The Night Before Christmas for December 24th. I stuck a Christmas sticker on those two books so I could keep track of them. The boys will take turns picking a book to open for days 2-23.
Last night was a hit! The boys enjoyed opening their “new” book and then reading it with daddy!
This year I included a couple Christmas board books we already owned but I think the boys will be too old for them next year. So I plan on updating the books with a few new ones each year.
