Curious about Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime? Check out all the cool features I experienced while screening a movie in a AMC Dolby Cinema.
During My Jungle Book adventure we had the opportunity to check out the new Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime at the AMC Burbank 16 location. Naturally we screened Disney’s Jungle Book complete with a visit to the concession stand. What’s a movie without a Diet Coke and snacks?
What is Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime?
AMC Dolby Cinema at is a premium cinema offering for moviegoers that makes every visit a completely captivating event. Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime combines spectacular image and sound technologies with inspired design and amazing comfort. Moviegoers will be wowed by Dolby Vision laser projection and Dolby Atmos sound, as well as AMC Prime power reclining seats with seat transducers that vibrate with the action on screen.
Basically the sound, screen and seats are awesome and provide and an amazing movie going experience. Now the vibration of the seats is really only impactful in movies with some action, I’m not sure if they would make a difference watching a chick flick. A super hero action movie would be intensely cool to watch in these special recliners.
AMC Prime at Burbank 16
The Burbank location features an audio-visual pathway into the theater, helping movie goes get into the mindset of watching a movie as soon as you walk into the theater. Check out this video from Savoring The Good that features Stuart Bowling, Director, Content and Creative Relations at Dolby Laboratories talking about audio visual wall technology.
Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime theaters are designed with matte black walls to minimize distractions during the show. They offer the biggest screens possible and best acoustic sound. Plus their visual technology allows them to show films as filmmakers intended, displaying more color, more light, more contrast, and a true inky black!
Before screening The Jungle Book we saw a demonstration comparing what regular theater projections show vs. what Dolby Cinema does and it was amazing. I couldn’t believe the side by side difference. It really makes a difference in the overall theater visuals.
AMC Prime Locations
Ok now I bet you want to watch a movie at Dolby Cinema to see for yourself what it’s like and are wondering is there an AMC Prime near me? As of Dec 2020 there are 24 AMC Prime locations with theaters in the following states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah.
I visited the AMC Burbank location in California during the Jungle Movie press trip but I also have a location a few minutes from my house in Tucson. The one location in Arizona is at the AMC Foothills location which is surprising because usually Phoenix gets all the new fancy features first.
Is AMC Prime worth it?
Pricing is also a subjective thing especially with the price of movie tickets varying greatly location and show times. We always tend to watch a matinee showing with the kids if we can save some money. Then it’s easier to justify a visit to the concession stand for popcorn and drinks.
I spot checked pricing and it seems like anywhere from $2 to $5 more for the Dolby Cinema experience. That’s a similar to the extra cost for a 3D or IMAX movie. Personally I think the surcharge is worth the innovative seating, sound and visuals especially when watching a big blockbuster style time.
AMC Prime vs IMAX
Is AMC Prime better than IMAX? Is Dolby Cinema better than IMAX? Obviously both of these questions are a matter of opinion but I am generally not impressed with IMAX. There are different versions of IMAX, but to me IMAX is the super huge screen (along with other features). I am not a fan. I probably had a bad movie going experience as a kid sitting too close and now I have a negative connection to IMAX theaters.
Not all AMC Prime theaters have Dolby Cinema but I think most do now. Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime that I experienced at Burbank AMC is amazing. It is the best movie going experience in my opinion. By the way you might be more familiar with the term Dolby Digital. What’s the difference? Dolby Digital is all about sound, whereas Dolby Cinema is the whole package with sound, visuals (screen) and environment (seating).
Why Aren’t There More AMC Prime Theaters?
Have you watched a movie at a Dolby Cinema at AMC prime theater? What do you think about the experience?
During the press junket for the Jungle Book, we were invited to screen the movie at the Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime in Burbank. As always, all opinions are my own.
