I wish getting my boys to eat more fruit was as easy as handing them an extra piece of fruit. They aren’t terrible fruit eaters but they certainly don’t eat enough in my expert mom opinion. It’s even harder now that we are back to school and they are gone most of the day. I always pack a fruit in their lunch. I also offer fruit with breakfast and as an afterschool snack option. But sometimes they need a little more incentive to choose fruit. Check out some fun ways I encourage my kids to eat more fruit.
1. Fruit Dip
Dipping fruit in yogurt, peanut butter or even caramel occasionally is a fun way to encourage them to eat more fruit. It’s easy to send a bag of apple slices with yogurt or peanut butter to school. Caramel is also fun but I usually save that as an afterschool option.
2. Fun Fruit Formats
Whole fruit isn’t the only option. 100% fruit strips and applesauce pouches are an easy way for kids to eat fruit on the go. The bonus is that you don’t have to worry about it going bad fast so you can keep your pantry stocked up. For a little extra fun, don’t miss these printable pet jokes to stick on the applesauce pouches.
3. Decorate the Fruit
Decorating whole fruit is also a really fun way to get your kids to each more fruit. My youngest is already a fan of oranges but he LOVED the emoji oranges that I made recently. I’ve also decorated oranges to look like the Lorax. Even simply doodling or writing a joke on a banana is appreciated.
How To Carve Out More Time In Your Day
You may feel like you have no time to decorate fruit but it really only takes a few minutes and I just found a way to save an extra hour in my day. I just tried Walmart’s Grocery Pickup service for the first time and it’s so convenient. I place my grocery order online one afternoon – possibly while catching up on my favorite show 😉 – Then scheduled my pickup for the next morning. I was able to order everything we needed from milk and toothpaste to fruit (duh!) and gluten-free bread from the convenience of my couch.
The pickup process was also pretty sweet. Walmart called me at the beginning of my pickup time window and let me know my order was ready. When I arrived at Walmart, I followed the signs to the Grocery Pickup designated parking spots.
Someone brought my order out a few minutes later and loaded it into my car for me. They let you know if any substitutions were necessary (if you allowed them on your order) and if anything in your order wasn’t available. They had everything I ordered except black plums.
I love that I saved the time navigating the store and waiting to check out. In addition, by ordering online I prevented any impulse purchases. I think this service is awesome for so many people who are short on time, who don’t want to walk around the store or who just enjoy convenient services. The best part? It’s free for orders over $30!
