Video game costumes are a fun costume theme with a wide range of characters to choose from. Plus wearing giant block heads seemed like the perfect costume for 2020, so we decided to DIY a Minecraft costume.

Pin this post so you can make a DIY Minecraft costume for your favorite Minecraft fan.

We’ve done Fortnite costumes before, this time around we decided to go with Minecraft Halloween costumes. Our Minecraft characters turned out to be fairly easy costumes to make.

Minecraft Halloween Costume Ideas

Technically we were planning a generic video game costume theme with each of us representing a different video game. Then we decided we could each pick a Minecraft character to dress up as but then Elliot changed his mind at the last minute.

So we ended up with a Star Wars Jedi (technically also in video games) and 3 of our favorite characters from Minecraft for Halloween. 😀

DIY Minecraft Costume

Our Minecraft costume theme was inspired by the Minecraft Steve costume head I bought on clearance when our local party store went out of business. I bought quite a few random costume pieces super cheap that I thought we’d use in the future.

Minecraft Steve was the perfect easy costume for Peter when we chose a video game costume theme.

In the end, we DIY-ed another Minecraft head or two, and accessories to complete the family costume theme. Minecraft costumes can be completely store bought, completely homemade or somewhere in between as I will detail out below.

Minecraft Steve

Easy Minecraft Steve Costume

  • Minecraft Steve Mask or Head
  • Blue T-Shirt
  • Jeans
  • Minecraft Sword

Peter’s costume was the easiest to create because we had the store-bought Steve cardboard box head. He already had jeans he could wear but I did have to buy him a teal t-shirt.

I also made him the Minecraft sword. I’m sharing details on how to make the sword down below, it’s the same method as the DIY pickaxe we made for the Alex costume. You could just buy a Minecraft sword instead and this costume would be completely DIY-free.

Minecraft Enderman Costume
Awesome Minecraft costume perfect for a Minecraft Video Game Halloween Party.

  • Minecraft Enderman Mask or Head
  • Long Sleeve Black Shirt
  • Black Pants
  • Minecraft Block like grass or TNT

Given that Quinn is ridiculously tall now (he passed by me this summer) and still very thin, and Enderman was the perfect character for him to dress up as. Enderman are tall Minecraft creatures with long legs and arms.

A long sleeve black shirt and black pants were the base of the Enderman Minecraft costume. We then made the Enderman head and a Minecraft block for him to carry.

I think black gloves would have been a good addition as well, we just didn’t think of it before Halloween.

DIY Enderman Head

Minecraft Enderman Head
Cardboard boxes are key to making Minecraft masks because each square box will represent a Minecraft character’s head.

We DIY-ed the Enderman head using a cardboard box, black spray paint and a few craft supplies. It was a really easy project overall, finding the right sized box was the hardest part.

In the end, I found book boxes (12″X12″X12″) at my local moving store for $1.25 each. They were the same size as the store-bought Minecraft Steve head. You could also create your own perfect sized boxes for Minecraft masks using cardboard sheets and duct tape.

I cut eye holes on one side and then spray painted the box black. I had sheer purple fabric that I taped on the inside of the box, to make purple eyes.

Elliot helped me with the last details. He used glue sticks to attach a couple of pink craft foam squares (construction paper would work too) around the eyes. Then glued random squares of black construction paper on all sides to give it the pixelated look.

A TNT block is the easiest DIY Minecraft Costume Accessory you can make.

Enderman are known for picking up and carrying blocks in Minecraft, so I wanted to make a block to use as the Enderman costume accessory.

I went with the easiest one for me to make which was a TNT block. Wrap a small cube box in red tissue paper, then print ‘TNT” extra large on white paper to add to the box.

I think a grass block would be accessory to make for your Minecraft Halloween costumes as well. If you kept the top of the box open, then they could be used to hold candy while trick or treating.

Quinn is super tall now (it’s ridiculous actually) so this inflatable child costume wouldn’t work for him but it would be cute on a little kid!

Minecraft Alex Costume
The key to an Alex Minecraft Costume is her Minecraft Mask and accessory like Minecraft Pickaxe.

Easy Minecraft Alex Costume

  • Alex Minecraft Mask or Head
  • Green T-Shirt
  • Grey or Brown Pants
  • Minecraft Pickaxe

Minecraft Alex is also another easy costume to make. I already owned a green t-shirt and grey pants so I was halfway done with my costume. The biggest costume piece is an Alex Mask, you can buy one or DIY it like I did with the help of an amazing website. Check out the details below.

I used glue sticks to attach the printed Alex Mask to a square box.

Semi-DIY Alex Head

I was going to attempt to make a DIY Alex using orange spray paint and construction paper but thankfully I came across a website that helped make it so much easier. The website shares papercraft templates to make a printable Alex costume.

I ended up just using it to create the Alex Minecraft head. Print out the pages for her head and glue it to the box. I used glue sticks, but double sided tape or a glue gun would also work.

The only thing that made it hard is that I printed it on my personal printer at home on 8 1/2″ X 11″ paper. If I made the Alex head again, I would have printed it on 12″ X 12″ paper at Kinkos or even 11″ X 17″.

The box was 12″ cubed so I had to print several copies on regular paper and piece it together to create my Alex head. It still turned out great and was really happy with my DIY box head!

DIY Minecraft Pickaxe and Sword

Printed Minecraft sword designs were cut out and attached to craft foam.

I found another website that helped me make a super cheap Minecraft Pickaxe and Minecraft sword. Yes you can buy them or if you have a Minecraft super fan, maybe you already own them. We didn’t own them and I didn’t want to spend a lot of money buying Minecraft weapons.

Instead I spent $3 making our own using this awesome tutorial! I paid $1 for a piece of foam board from our dollar store and $2 for two 11X17 pages at Kinkos. $3 and a little effort and we had some sweet Minecraft accessories for our Minecraft Halloween costumes!

More Minecraft Costumes For Kids

Beyond a Steve, Alex or Enderman costume, there are a few other fun Minecraft costume ideas online to purchase or DIY including Minecraft Skeleton, Minecraft Ender Dragon, Minecraft Creeper, Minecraft Armor, and Minecraft Zombie Costumes. I think a Minecraft snowman would also be super cool.
