Don't miss the A, B, C, D's of water safety to keep kids and families safe around water for National Water Safety Month.

May is National Water Safety Month which is perfect timing since it’s the start of summer break. I don’t know about your kids but mine choose to swim as much as possible during the summer. Actually, it’s more like half of the year around here since Arizona weather is usually on the warmer side most of the year.

I love encouraging my boys to swim as much as possible. It’s a great way to keep them active and limit the extra screen time they also beg for during the summer. Luckily for us, all of the grandparents have their own pool, so there is no shortage of swimming opportunities for us. Along with more time in and around water, comes the importance of being diligent around water to keep kids safe.

National Water Safety Month

The ZAC Foundation wants to prepare children and families for a lifetime of water safety. Their website offers a wealth of information on how to keep all kids from newborns to teenagers safe around water. Do you know the A, B, C, D’s of Water Safety, it’s an easy thing you can share with your friends and family?

A is for Adult

  • Never let children be alone near a pool, ocean, lake, or river. And I’d include a bathtub in that rule as well. Accidents can happen even with strong swimmers.

B is for Barrier

  • Have a fence that goes around your pool. A fence isn’t a substitute for constant supervision but it’s another layer of protection for wandering and curious kids.

C is for Classes

  • Kids and adults should take safety classes. My kids have taken swim lessons several times over the years. And I’ve taken CPR a few times knowing it’s important to know just in case an emergency occurs.

D is for Drains

  • Teach all swimmers to stay away from all pool & spa drains. I didn’t realize drains were such a danger, so this has been a crucial tip for me to learn. Check this video to learn more about how dangerous drains can be.
