What better reason to make cupcakes than a national holiday? Not that I really need a reason to make cupcakes, they are one of my favorites things to make AND eat. 😉 These patriotic cupcakes were really easy to make.

I really wanted red, white and blue cupcakes and with a package of red cupcake mix and blue cupcake mix already in my pantry, it was obvious I only needed white frosting.

Red and Blue Patriotic Cupcakes

I made it super easy by using packaged cake mix, one red and one blue. You could always make your favorite cake recipe and use food dye to recreate the color.

Poured fondant patriotic cupcakes

I’ve been making my own butter cream frosting lately but for this recipe, I needed a can of store-bought frosting. I found this really cool technique on pinterest where you basically heat up the frosting and pour it on top of the cupcakes. The frosting hardens similar to fondant.Easy Patriotic Cupcakes with poured fondant frosting

It can be a bit mess though, so definitely follow their directions about placing a flexible cutting mat underneath when frosting.

The red and blue sprinkles look a little bit like fireworks. 🙂
