We just returned from a few days at Walt Disney World and rode the Pirates of the Caribbean ride no less than three times which means exiting through the pirate themed gift shop three times as well. Elliot kept eying the pirate gear, particularly a Pirate set that included a pirate spyglass.
In the end, he spent his souvenir money on a Rocket the Racoon costume hoodie and Ezra’s lightsaber. Luckily for him, Disney just sent over a printable activity packet to celebrate Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales opening in theaters later this month. One of the awesome pirate activities included is a pirate spyglass craft which I made for the boys. It turned out pretty cute, so I am sharing the tutorial with you too!
Pirate Spyglass Craft Materials
- cardboard toilet paper tubes
- paper cups like these on amazon
- decorative washi tape (optional)
How to make a Pirate Spyglass Craft
If I had used solid color cups, then I might have skipped decorating the cardboard toilet paper tube. But I found these sweet blue striped 9oz party cups at my local store and they screamed pirate to me. So naturally, I wanted the other part of the craft to look pirate-ish too. So I started by wrapping the cardboard tube in decorative washi tape.
Trace the bottom of the cup on a piece of card stock, then the bottom of the cardboard tube within that circle. Cut out both circles so that you end up with a paper ring.
Trace the end of the cardboard tube on the bottom of the paper cup and cut it out.
Glue the paper ring to the end of the cardboard tube. Once the glue is dry, push the end of the cardboard tube through the top of the cup. Keep pushing until the cardboard ring touches the bottom of the cup. Your Pirate Spyglass is now fully extended and you are ready to explore the high seas.
