Ugly Christmas sweater sugar cookies is the sugar cookie recipe you need for your holiday gatherings. They will be your new favorite cookie this holiday season that combines the fun of ugly sweaters with sugar cookie dough!
Tis the season for holiday parties! My favorite kind of parties are ones that are yummy and fun. A couple of common holiday party ideas are a Christmas cookie decorating party or an ugly Christmas sweater party.
I think both ideas are fabulous but I had a brilliant idea recently to combine them. I thought it’d be fun to make an ugly Christmas sweater cookie bar, perfect for any holiday party you are planning. Instead of wearing ugly Christmas sweaters to the party, your guests are decorating and eating them.
How To Throw A Christmas Cookie Decorating Party
As with any Christmas cookie decorating party, the prep is similar.
Ugly Sweater Cookies Step 1 – Bake The Cookies
Start by making your sugar cookies the day before your party. You can make ugly sweater cookies using your favorite cookie recipe or even a packaged sugar cookie mix from the store. I used an electric mixer with a large bowl because I wanted a lot of ugly sweater cookies to decorate.
Then roll out the dough and use a sweater-shaped cookie cutter to create sweater cookies. Be sure to use a lightly floured surface when you roll dough. The key is finding an ugly sweater cookie cutter to make sweater shapes.
Ugly Sweater Cookies Step 2 – Prep The Frosting
For this project, I went the easy route and bought a few tubs of pre-made buttercream frosting. I did decorate the containers with craft paper and washi tape I had on hand. If you have the time, homemade frosting usually tastes better.
You can also use separate bowls for each frosting color. Add food coloring to each small bowl (or frosting tub).
You could also use cookie icings, just be sure each piping bag has a difference icing color.
Step 3 – Gather Lots of Sprinkles
The more sprinkles the better. Keep in mind that we are decorating UGLY Christmas sweaters, you will need a variety of sprinkles in different colors and shapes. Keep them organized and accessible in a muffin pan. Broken up pieces of candy canes also work great, I love peppermint Christmas cookies.
Step 4 – Decorate your cookie party setup
Add a few decorations to add a little holiday flair to your cookie party set up!
Step 5 – Let Them Decorate!
Prepare yourself, it might get a little messy. 😉
But it’s super fun to come with crazy cookie designs. You could even try and match the ugly Christmas sweater you are wearing!

Bonus Step – Award Prizes
Just like a regular ugly Christmas sweater party, you could judge the sweater cookie results and award ugly Christmas sweater prizes! Or just eat them. 🙂
