Are you looking for new books for your 2nd or 3rd grader to read? I created this list of book series for boys, 7 – 9 year old boys a few years ago when my oldest was this age.
Cool Books for 7 Year Old Boys (and 8 and 9 year olds too)
I’ve just updated it to include more books that my youngest also loved at this age. Some of these books are included in the Kindle Unlimited program if you are a subscriber. Otherwise I’ve included amazon links below for your convenience and also recommend checking them out at your local library.
Easy to Read Books For Kids
These suggestions are for book series for boys 7 – 9 years old because that’s the age range my sons started reading them. Some of these books they continued to love and read as they got older as well.
I hope you find a new book series for you child to read on our list of awesome book series for 2nd and 3rd grade boys.
Book Series for 7 - 9 Year Old Boys
These book series are some of my son's favorite books from 2nd and 3rd grade. If you need a new book idea for your elementary school son (or daughter) give one of these a try!
Star Wars Jedi Academy Books
Can you imagine going to middle school as a Jedi student? Yoda as a teacher might be a unique situation but there is still plenty of junior high drama mixed in while learning essential Jedi skills.
Wonkenstein (The Creature from My Closet)
Quinn's favorite new series is The Creature from My Closet. These easy to read chapter books follow the adventures of middle schooler Rob Burnside and the unique creatures that come from his closet. A special door and an accident with his chemistry set result in magically mixed up creatures based on two different book characters.
We loved these so much, they inspired a couple of costumes for book character day at school: Lord of the Hat costume and Potterwookie costume.
Big Nate Series Collection
Big Nate is a series that is often recommended for fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It's actually based on a comic strip that spun off to include books as well. It follows the adventures of 11-year old Nate who seems to be a mischief magnet. Quinn has only read a couple but seems to enjoy them.
Diary of a Minecraft Zombie Books
If you have a Minecraft fan, then they will enjoy these quick books that follow the adventures of Zach Zombie and his best friend Steve.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid Books
Quinn's first favorite series and the one that really inspired him to read on his own. I think it's a staple book series for many elementary school kids. The boys also enjoy watching the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies.
Wayside School Boxed Set
The Wayside School series are chapter books based on an elementary school with supernatural elements. The original book is almost 40 years old and a classic from my own elementary school days! Quinn's 2nd-grade teacher introduced him to the series.
Harry Potter: The Illustrated Collection
We just started reading the illustrated version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone together. I'm hoping it lights a wizarding fire with Quinn and he starts reading the Harry Potter books on his own. The first 4 books are available in illustrated versions right now.
The boys enjoyed checking out Diagon Alley at Universal Studios and playing a LEGO Harry Potter game on their iPad, so they are already a little familiar with the wizarding world!
Geronimo Stilton Collection Box Set
The most popular children's book series in Italy is Geronimo Stilton, so it's no surprise that American kids dig them as well. They follow the adventures of a talking mouse named Geronimo Stilton who works as a journalist in New Mouse City. There are a TON of these books which is awesome. The newer series with under a dozen titles kill me because Quinn has a hard time waiting for the next one to be released. So then we have to find another series for him to read in the interim.
Goosebumps Books
Quinn is just starting the Goosebumps series. I think watching the Goosebumps movie earlier this year helped cement his interest in the series. This is another book series with lots of titles. Yay! 🙂
Captain Underpants Books
Captain Underpants is a little ridiculous but sometimes that's why little boys like. The series heavily features potty humor which isn't everyone's cup of tea. Whatever it takes to get them to read, read, read....
Stick Dog Collection
Stick Dog and his stray friends are always looking for their next meal. They love discovering new to them foods like pizza, donuts and ice cream.
Stick Cat Books
Fans of Stick Dog books will love this series also from Tom Watson. Stick Cat and his neighbor friend Edith find plenty of mischief living in their rise rise apartments in the big city.
National Geographic Kids Just Joking
National Geographic Kids publishes a series of fun animal joke books called Just Joking. You'll find the pages filled with kid-friendly jokes and cool animal pictures. They are a home run with both of my guys!
These easy to ready chapter books are fun for young boys. If you have a reluctant reader try starting with comic books. Get them to love to reading graphic novels or comic books and then you can introduce different book series, formats and reading levels to them.
