Cute Elf Names

A Christmas elf magically arriving in your home is a holiday tradition that has become ridiculously popular during the Christmas season. It’s a fun extension of Santa Claus and Christmas activities that can last a full month (or less depending upon when you elf arrives).

This is a Christmas tradition that is hard to stop, so be aware if you do embark upon the craziness it can get tiring. But it’s a fun way to engage the whole family in the Christmas Spirit with a sense of humor.

What are Good Elf Names?

When our elf first arrived we didn’t do any research on elf names. I let the boys choose a name and since they were so little, our elf ended up with quite the ridiculous name. It’s over the top ridiculous.

His name is Honey Pickle. One of the boys wanted to name him Honey Nut (as in cheerios) and the other one wanted to name him Pickle. So he was christened Honey Pickle to appease both boys who thought it was the best elf name ever.

So what’s a good elf on the shelf name? Anything that makes your kids happy. So if your kids pick fun names inspired by everyday life, like their favorite foods then just roll with it.

If you need inspiration I have some of the best elf names below to help you find the perfect name for your elf. You can also watch social media as parents around the country announce the return of their elf.

Elf On The Shelf Names
Elf on the shelf introduction letter that came with our elf the first year

Some people may opt to stick with the name Christopher Pop-in-kins, but there are just so many fun ideas you can choose instead! If you can’t chose one, then have all your family members pick a name and draw it out of a hat. Or combine two names into one like we did.

I think of our elf as Honey Pickle Heffren ( because of course he took our last name), although he could be just Honey Pickle, with Pickle being his family name. I think either is a great name and a funny name.

If you have new elf on the shelf name ideas, leave me a comment. I’d love to include it on another list of fun elf name ideas. I’d love to have the most extensive list of elf names to help inspire families.

What is the Elf on the Shelf?

Some families that believe in magic acquire a magical visitor during the holiday season in the form of an elf or elf on the shelf. This elf brings extra Christmas magic to the house and also watches to make sure everyone has enough holiday cheer. The elf reports directly back to Santa in the North Pole so it’s essential that everyone is on their best behavior.

Does Elf on the shelf have a name?

Your elf doesn’t arrive with a name, just like a new baby. You get to choose the best name for your family’s elf. Hopefully the list above gave you plenty of ideas and inspiration when it came to naming your elf. You could brainstorm additional ideas and then let everyone vote on the best name for your elf on the shelf visitor.

When does the Elf on the Shelf come?

When your Elf on the Shelf starts bringing cheer can vary by household. Sometimes the elf arrives the day after Thanksgiving. Other elves arrive on December 1st. I’ve even heard of the elf on the shelf showing up for the 12 days before Christmas. The timing isn’t an exact science, it’s more of a holiday guesstimate. Whatever works best for your family is likely when your elf on the shelf will come.

Is Elf on the Shelf really magical?

I think every families definition of magic varies. In our house, the elf definitely brings holiday magic. I don’t know what could be more magical than an elf that shows up for the holidays just to bring extra festive cheer. For our family, just waking up to see what silly thing the elf possibly did overnight is fun.

Can the Elf on the Shelf stay after Christmas?

Our elf never stays after Christmas. Honey Pickle leaves with Santa back to the North Pole on Christmas Eve night. I think most elves go home on Christmas Eve or Christmas night. There could be special situations where your own elf on the shelf might stay after Christmas.

List of Elf Christmas Movies

Here are some of our favorite movies to watch with elves! Watching one of these beloved Christmas movies can help with possible names for you elf as you get in the spirit of the holiday seaon.

  • Elf
  • The Christmas Chronicles
  • Rise of the Guardians (on Netflix)

Elven Names Inspired by Elf Characters?

With the The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power just finishing up season one on Amazon Prime, there are definitely going to be more J.R.R. Tolkien and Middle Earth inspired elvish names popping up this year. I am not going to list any cool elf name ideas from the elvish language since you could easily just grab the name of your favorite elf. I know for those that prefer the fantasy world of video games, World Of Warcraft might also inspire your elf fantasy names. I did find a couple of sites with an elf name generator you could use if you like, check them out here or here.

This is my first year doing elf on the shelf and I’m doing it for my niece and nephew. I love the idea and I already have some really fun mischievous ideas planned. I might have went a bit overboard bc I have 3 elves 😬 but hey it’s a special time and something we can all enjoy and laugh about as a family. My 3 elves names are Figgy Puddin, Candy Cane and my favorite that I came up with is Elfis Presently😁 Have a wonderful day and a Merry Christmas!!!

Hello all! I love the list of names that you have compiled! We recently adopted an elf as well and my son decided to name him “Tattle.” I asked him why he chose this name, he said, “because he’s going to “tattle” on us mommy!” I thought it was too cute! We all have really enjoyed his presence in our family this year. 🙂
