A Mr. Smee costume is one of the easiest costume ideas for little kids all the way through adults. Although I am partial to my own little Mr. Smee costume version.

I have to admit that Elliot’s Mr. Smee costume is definitely my favorite costume from our Peter Pan theme. In case you aren’t a Disney fan, Mr. Smee is Captain Hook’s sidekick from Peter Pan. Mr. Smee also makes an appearance in the Disney Junior show Jake and the Never Land pirates.

Easy Mr. Smee Costume Materials

  • Blue Striped Shirt
  • Blue Pants (try to match the pants/shirt together)
  • Brown Sandals
  • Red Knit Cap
  • Pirate Sword
  • Glasses

DIY Mr. Smee Costume Shirt and Shorts

This costume can be very budget friendly depending upon what pieces you already own. My biggest challenge was finding a good medium blue striped shirt.

I scoured thrift stores first but eventually found ours on Ebay for about $8. It’s a nice shirt that he can wear after Halloween so it’s not a bad price for a shirt he can wear again.

There are various shades of blue used in Mr. Smee costumes, I think the key is making sure your shirt and shorts match. I found leggings in the girl’s department that matched the shirt. I just cut them off and made them into for Elliot.

Mr. Smee Costume Accessories

I ended up making Elliot’s hat from a Santa hat we already head in our dress up box. It was super easy to convert it, check out my Mr. Smee Hat tutorial.

I bought reader glasses from the $1 store and removed the lenses. It wasn’t easy but you can’t beat $1. If you can find the blue light computer glasses cheap, then you wouldn’t have to remove the lenses.

We had foam pirate swords in our dress up box bought previously from the $1 spot at Target. Elliot already owned the brown sandals, so free for me. 🙂

So cute!! Great tips! My 16 month old is going as Mr. Smee this year and I was excited to come across your blog. Pretty sure he won’t keep glasses or a hat on, but it’ll be worth a shot. I passed the Dollar Store today thinking I wouldn’t find anything in there. Guess I’ll be looking tomorrow! Thanks!

Yay! We saw a couple of Mr. Smee’s at Disneyland… definitely not something you can buy at a costume store. So glad I could help! 🙂

I made my Mr. smee costume for my 16 month old. I’d love to share it with you, but I’m not sure how I could do that. Everyone loves it!

Any chance you want to sell the costume? My son wants to be smee and I can’t find a similar shirt anywhere!

I assume you tried ebay? That’s where I found mine last year. How about freezer painting a shirt, finding the right shade of blue and use white paint?
