Need a Mr Smee costume hat for Halloween? Check out this easy way to convert a Santa hat into a Mr. Smee hat.
I found an authentic Disney store Peter Pan costume for Quinn one year for only $7. It was just the inspiration I needed to choose our Neverland costume theme for this year.
I love hte challenge of making a costume even if its just a semi-homemade creation. There is no need to pay full retail price for a complete Halloween costume.
With Quinn dressing as Peter Pan, I had my husband dress as the Disney Villain, Captain Crook which made Mr. Smee an easy choice for Elliot. Somehow a toddler Mr. Smee is so much cuter.
How to Make a DIY Mr. Smee Costume Hat
Finding the right shirt and shorts would take patience but I figured it was possible. The knit cap was the most unique aspect of the costume and my biggest concern.
Mr. Smee wears a very specific knit cap with little red puff ball at the end, sort of like a Santa Claus hat but without any white.
I briefly flirted with the idea of ordering a custom knit hat but after checking the prices on Etsy, I decided to make one myself. And my knitting skills are so lacking that I shouldn’t be allowed to put the word “skills” next to the word “knitting”!
DIY Mr. Smee Costume Hat
Remember how I compared the Mr. Smee Hat to Santa’s hat? Well that led me to realize I could easily just modify a Santa hat and make a Mr. Smee Costume hat.
We already had a cheap Santa hat in our play box so my only purchase was a small piece of red felt for under $1.
- Start with a basic Santa hat. If you don’t already own one, then check out a local dollar store or thrift store.
- Cut off the white cuff. I didn’t bother hemming the edge.
- Cut a piece of red felt to cover the white pom pom.
- Pin and hand sew the red felt around the white pom pom.
