I’m always excited to talk about what will be new at Disneyland each year and 2019 is no exception. This year the big news for Disney Parks is the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge but there are some other new additions and celebrations to look forward to at Disneyland as well.
Captain Marvel
With Captain Marvel arriving in theaters March 9th, it should come as no surprise that we are getting a new character encounter with the Captain herself! She joins Captain America, Spider-Man, Black Panther and the Dora Milaje at Disney California Adventure.
Captain Marvel Merchandise
You’ll find some awesome Captain Marvel merchandise at the Collector’s Warehouse, the gift shop you walk through when exiting the Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! attraction in California Adventure. I’m not really a cat person but I have to say, Goose the kitty or rather the flerken was pretty cool.
Get Your Ears On – A Mickey and Minnie Celebration
Disneyland is celebrating 90 years of fun with Mickey and Minnie Mouse. It’s going to be the biggest Mickey and Mouse celebration to date! ‘Mickey’s Mix Magic’ is a new projection show featuring DJ Mickey hosting a hip new family-fun dance party.
‘Mickey’s Soundsational Parade’ will be back with a brand new opening! As with all Disney celebrations, you can expect limited time decor along with specialty foods and merchandise.

Lunar New Year
It’s the Year of the Pig! Disney California Adventure will celebrate Lunar New Year from Friday, Jan 25th to Sunday, February 17th. The Lunar New Year celebration will include live entertainment and musical performances including an enhanced “Mulan’s Lunar New Year Procession.” The Three Little Pigs will make a rare appearance in the park during the procession! Visitors can also participate in festive arts and crafts like Chinese calligraphy, paper lantern making, and face painting.
I’ve never visited Disneyland for Lunar New Year but it sure sounds fun! We sometimes visit Disneyland during Rodeo Break but that usually happens just after this multicultural celebration. If you do visit during the Lunar New Year celebration, check out the special Sip & Savor pass that anyone can buy if you want to get the best value when trying all the special Lunar New Year foods!
2019 Disneyland Food and Wine Festival
Speaking of awesome foods, the Disneyland Food and Wine Festival will be back at Disney California Adventure March 1st – April 23rd. I had a blast last year the 2018 Disneyland Food and Wine Festival, hanging out with friends and noshing on delicious foods. I am pretty sure I will be back during the 2019 Disneyland Food and Wine Festival when I am in town for a conference.
The Disneyland Food and Wine Festival is a great time to visit Disneyland without the kids for a couples trip or even a girlfriend getaway like I did last year. That being said, there is always plenty of fun stuff to do at Disney for kids including some special kid-focused activities at the Disneyland Food and Wine Festival. Plus I think just about everyone’s spring break will fall within the event, so it’s a great time to bring the whole family and spend a week at Disneyland!
Pixar Pier Attractions
Pixar Pier opened with a great flourish last year starting with Pixar Fest in the spring, followed by the retheming of Paradise Pier to Pixar Pier in the summer. It’s not 100% complete though, there are still a couple of new attractions in the works for this year.
First up is Jessie’s Critter Carousel. You’ll find Toy Story Boardwalk adjacent to Incredibles Park. Toy Story Boardwalk already features Toy Story Mania! and now Jessie’s Critter Carousel. The Toy Story neighborhood is my favorite section of Pixar Pier.

On the other end of Pixar Pier is Inside Out Headquarters featuring all your favorite emotions from Inside Out. We had a blast at Disneyland’s Halloween party in Inside Out costumes a couple of years ago. Now that the Halloween Party includes admission to Disney California Adventure as well, we may have to revisit that costume theme again!
Later this year a new family-friendly attraction, the Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind will open. Speculation is that the Flik’s Flyers ride from the now-closed Bugsland will be rethemed as the Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind.
Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge
Everyone is eagerly anticipating the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Luckily for us West Coasters, we get Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge first. Its scheduled to open sometime this summer with the WDW version opening in the fall.
Guests will find themselves walking around the Black Spire Outpost, an infamous stop for traders, adventurous and smugglers on the Outer Rim. I’m going to assume it’s as amazing if not more so then the level of immersion you feel in Andy’s Backyard at Toy Story Land.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge or Star Wars Land as you often hear people call it, will feature two new attractions, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. Both sound amazing, check out this teaser trailer for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. It was filmed on the actual attraction, giving you a feel for the realism the ride invokes!
