It’s no secret that I love to make costumes. Last year we ended up making an adorable cat burglar costume which is sort of funny because we are not cat-people. Not. At. All. I am remedying that by partnering with Disney Junior to share with you a super easy Puppy Dog Pals costume tutorial. Now we have dogs covered too!

Both Rolly and Bingo are adorable but we opted to make a Bingo costume. The base of our Bingo costume is a gray hoodie sweatshirt. The most important addition to the sweatshirt is Bingo’s blue collar with a lightning bolt. We also added gray ears to the hood.

Directions

Start by cutting 1″ strips of medium blue felt to create the collar. Depending upon the length of your felt piece, you may need to cut more than one piece. I needed two lengths to go all the way around the neck of the hoodie.

How to make a Puppy Dog Pals Costume

I recommend drawing or printing a template for the lightning bolt shape ahead of time. Then it’s easy to trace your design onto the felt before cutting it out. When working with felt, it’s important to use sharp scissors, otherwise, you might go insane. ????

Adding ears to a Puppy Dog Pals Costume

I also created an ear template and then sewing the ears to the hoodie. I pinched them at the bottom when I was sewing the ears on to get them to fold over a bit like Bingo’s ears.

You can see from the pictures, that I was using a very basic stitch. I don’t own a sewing machine and have limited sewing skills but it’s enough to make cute costumes for my kids to play dress up in.

Adding the lightning collar to a Puppy Dog Pals Costume

I sewed the lightning bolt to the collar felt and then the collar felt all the way around the neck of the hoodie. Now my costume is a little more complicated because I used a zip up hoodie. I recommend making this with a pullover sweatshirt to avoid the zipper complication.

I needed to leave access to the zipper, so I ended up with about 3 inches of collar that just folds over to the other side and attaches with velcro. Again this step is only necessary with a zip up hoodie.

That’s it. The Puppy Pals costume hoodie turned out adorable and my little guy had no problem hamming it up and pretending to be Bingo. If you love the idea of making costumes out of sweatshirts, don’t miss the rest of my hoodie costume tutorials. And don’t miss all the other puppy party ideas I shared last month!

I’m sorry, I don’t actually sell the ones I make. I just write tutorials so everyone can make their own!
