Where are my Elliot fans? I am a HUGE Elliot fan. And not just because my youngest is named Elliot… I also dig dragons, like Pete’s Dragon. So I figured the perfect themed pumpkin for us this year was a Pete’s Dragon Pumpkin.

DIY Pete's Dragon Pumpkin

I tend to latch onto one character and run with it, like Olaf or BB-8. I guess this year Elliot, Pete’s Dragon is my guy. Only I didn’t just make one Pete’s Dragon Pumpkin, I had to make two because I love the pop of pink on the original Pete’s Dragon from 1977 too!

Whether you make one or both, the process is pretty simple starting with a foam pumpkin and decorating it with basic craft supplies that I always keep in my craft stash.

  • Foam pumpkin
  • Green craft paint
  • Craft foam
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Googly eyes
  • Pom poms
  • Glue dots/tape

I found small foam pumpkins at my local dollar store and knew they would be perfect for this project. I used two coats of green craft paint to ensure complete coverage over the orange color. Then I added googly eyes and pom poms for nostrils using glue dots. The craft foam ears were taped on.

I also used various colors of green pipe cleaners to make the new Pete’s Dragon mohawk-style hair, similar to my Pete’s Dragon craft. I added a handful of pink tissue paper shreds to mimic the mop of pink hair on the original Pete’s Dragon.

Using a foam pumpkin made it easy to work with the pipe cleaners. It pushed right into the foam. A small piece of black pipe cleaner for the mouth. And white craft foam teeth completed the smiles.

DIY Original Pete's Dragon Pumpkin

I hope you like our two Elliot pumpkins! Which one do you like better? The new Pete’s Dragon or original Pete’s Dragon.
