We’ve had a huge year for cool new geeky shows to inspire costume this Halloween. We considered both Loki and WandaVision but in the end decided to do a family them of Marvel What If Costumes.

Pin this post to inspire your next Marvel Costume theme

Marvel’s What If is a new show on Disney+, so new that some people may not ‘get’ your costume, or who you are trying to be. That’s ok. If you landed on this page, then you are either know what What If is or are intrigued enough by something that you are checking out these What If costume ideas.

Marvel What If Costumes

A friend inspired me to make a Captain Carter costume for a last minute trip to the Oogie Boogie Bash at Disneyland. I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off, but somehow it turned out really great. Check out the tutorial on how I made my DIY Captain Carter costume and Captain Carter shield

As a result, my family decided to pick Marvel What If characters for our annual Halloween costume theme. I was headed back to the Oogie Boogie Bash with them the next month and we always attend wearing themed costumes.

Captain America ZOmbie with shield
Don’t forget to give your Zombie Captain America a shield

In the end we went with costumes from the zombie episode (episode 5). Quinn dressed as Zombie Captain America. A modified Captain America costume and zombie makeup make this costume fairly easily to pull off. Check out the DIY Zombie Captain America costume tutorial for full details.

Bucky Barnes – What If… episode 5

Elliot already wanted to be some version of the Winter Solider/Bucky Barnes. Bucky appears in the Zombie episode and during the episode he acquires Captain America’s shield.

Black shirt with one silver sleeve and red star near shoulder
If you have access to a sewing machine, modifying a black shirt is an easy Winter Soldier costume idea

So we kept his costume to a simple, recognizable Winter Soldier costume shirt with a beat up Captain America shield. I made the costume shirt by adding one silver long sleeve to a black shirt. Then used my Cricut to cut out a red star and ironing it on the shoulder.

This simple Bucky Barnes costumes works great with a black mask, black pants and black shoes

We made a standard Captain America Shield and then Elliot smeared little sharpie marks all over it, to make it look beat up.

Happy Hogan – What If… episode 5

Peter is happy to dress up in theme with us as long as his costume is simple and comfortable. Simple and comfortable costumes translate into t-shirt focused costumes like his Beagle Boys costume from DuckTales or Riley’s Boyfriend costume from Inside Out.

Happy costume from What If Zombie Episode includes a shirt that says “I’m not single I’m saving myself for Thor”

As soon as I watched the zombie episode and I saw Happy Hogan in his silly shirt for Peter Parker’s vlog, I knew it would be perfect for him. The shirt reads “I’m not single, I’m saving myself for Thor.” The shirt was simple enough to make, you can grab my Cricut Design file here if you want to recreate it.

DIY Iron Man Glove

And then I modified a glove with duct tape to create the Iron Man blaster. I cut the finger tips off of a dark red glove (left glove). Then I added silver duct tape around the edge of each finger tip and the wrist.

Initially I wanted to rig up a light for the center of the glove but decided to keep it simple. Instead I just added a yellow circle of duct tape to ‘simulate’ the repulsor light.
